A Shopaholic's Rationale

During the last half hour I have found myself seriously considering the following purchases...

 7  High Waist Skinny Jeans...$178

Ray-Ban Wayfayer Sunglasses...$119

And the big guy

Macbook Pro...$1200

Now tell me please, where do I get off even considering any of these items? Yes, I have a job and yes, I get a considerable contribution from financial aid to help me with, not only tuition, books, etc., but also living expenses. However, can Ray-Bans really be considered living expenses? A Macbook is slightly more justifiable. At least a new computer could arguably aid my education, but still, this is a stretch. Particularly when I am typing this blog entry on a perfectly functional, albeit 3 year old, macbook.

As an effort to keep myself organized and try to contain myself from impulses like the above, I decided to put together my yearly budget today. For a college student supporting herself, I don't do half bad, but man how that can change in a second. I have allotted myself a whopping $100 every month outside of my necessary expenses. After the deep dish pizza I ordered this evening due to the fact that I felt too sick to cook, I am left with $83.33. A few more nights like this and I'm dippin' into savings. Now I did underestimate my monthly net income and overestimate my monthly expenses, so I suppose if I set aside the extra money I'm taking in every month I can eventually save up enough to completely justify any or all of these purchases. The real question is, will I follow this logic?....probably not.
Problem? I want it  NOW. I mean I didn't just wait for months and months for new Macbooks to come out just to have to wait until they get old to actually buy one. Besides, my current computer really isn't running up to par for what I need to do. And a really good pair of jeans is an investment piece. They will last much longer than any of the moderately priced jeans I already own. I'm saving money in the long run really. As far as the sunglasses go....well, I need to have a good pair of sunglasses not only to protect my retinas, but also for safe driving. Man, when the sun reflects off of that snow? Can you say dangerous?! I've bought plenty of cheap sunglasses in the past, but damn, they just don't seem to hold up. A trendy pair of Ray-Bans is obviously the solution. Safety first.

Like what I did there? This is why I will continue to be stressed about money until the end of time....or at least until I am a successful midwife...or I marry rich.
